Synopsis: Women around the world have long dreamed big, even when they’ve been told their dreams didn’t matter. They’ve spoken out, risen up and fought for what’s right, even when they’ve been told to be quiet. Whether in science, the arts, sports or activism, women and girls throughout history have been determined to break barriers and change the status quo. They haven’t let anyone get in their way and have helped us better understand our world and what’s possible. In this companion book to She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World, Chelsea Clinton introduces readers to a group of thirteen incredible women who have shaped history all across the globe.
Let me just say that I wish that there were more books like this that highlight the achievements of women on the bookshelves of libraries and bookstores. This is a gem and should be required reading. Clinton shines a light on lesser known women who weren’t afraid to dream big and never took “no” for an answer. We need this message to ring in the hearts of little girls all around the world. Just because something seems scary and there are obstacles in the way does not mean that you stop–you find a way or you make a way. That’s the message we should be sending to our daughters, nieces, and all the young women whose lives we touch each day.
Boiger’s illustrations were vibrant and endearing. They captured the essence of the women highlighted. Clinton’s text was well written and I loved how she emphasized “she persisted” throughout. Reading the story of each of these trailblazing women filled my heart with such joy. I was left thinking that if these women could turn the ordinary into extraordinary, so could I. I hope that every young lady that reads this book closes it feeling empowered too. You don’t have to have superpowers to do change the world. You just have to persist!
