Synopsis: Miles Murphy is not happy to be moving to Yawnee Valley, a sleepy town that’s famous for one thing and one thing only: cows. In his old school, everyone knew him as the town’s best prankster, but Miles quickly discovers that Yawnee Valley already has a prankster, and a great one. If Miles is going to take the title from this mystery kid, he is going to have to raise his game.
This is the first book in The Terrible Two book series. Miles Murphy reluctantly moves to Yawnee Valley where he hopes to be the school’s biggest prankster but at Yawnee Valley Science and Letters Academy he’ll meet his match.
This book had me in stitches. My 13-year old son would thoroughly enjoy reading this one. It will connect most with boys from ages 11-13. Not to say girls won’t like it though. I will mention that there is some deception and deflection in the story but it is appropriate and adds to the storyline. The pranks are well thought out and the competition between Miles and Niles takes on a life of its own.
Cornell’s illustrations were a gratifying complement to the text. I cannot express how much I LOVED Niles’s “School Helper” creepy, smiling face. It was a true highlight for me (HA!). Middle school students will find this book easy to read and relate to the humor. They will be eager to see what else “The Terrible Two” are up to in the other books in the series. John and Barnett have presented a Pranksters Masterclass.
